Alvey/Gravely Family Fun Run and 5K

The Alvey/Gravely Family Fun Run and 5K is THIS weekend, Saturday, April 26! The Fun Run (1 mile) begins at 8 AM; the 5K begins at 8:30 AM. The starting point for both races is at Alvey Elementary School. All profit raised from this fun event will be split between the two schools to be used to meet current needs.

If you still want to register for the race, please do so by Thursday, April 24th. Registration closes after Thursday. To register online, click the following hyperlink. Or fill out a paper form available in both schools' front offices. If you are using paper registrations, please remember to include the $5 per person late fee. The late fee is automatic online.

IMPORTANT!!!! Bag pick-up is this Friday, April 25th from 3:15 PM - 7 PM at Alvey Elementary. We ask that all participants pick up their bag/bib number on Friday evening as we will have limited abilities to hand them out on Saturday morning. You will also be picking up your race shirts and freebies so you definitely don't want to miss bag pickup!

Alvey/Gravely Fun Run & 5K Needs Volunteers

Teacher Appreciation Week

Alvey Staff Appreciation Week is May 5th - 9th!
Staff Appreciation Week is a time to recognize and honor our dedicated teachers and staff. Few other professionals touch and influence as many children as educators do. This is a great opportunity to show our appreciation for the effort our teachers and staff at Alvey put in each day. 

The Staff Appreciation Committee has planned a special week but we need your help! 
Families of children in grades K-2nd: We ask for your help in providing items for the Breakfast. Please click on the Breakfast link to sign up to bring in an item or two.
Families of children in grades 3rd-5th: We ask for help in providing items for the Luncheon. Please click on the Lunch link to sign up to bring in an item or two.

Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten Registration for the 2014-15 school year will be held on April 10th from 9:00 -2:00 and on April 24th from 3:15-6:00.  Click here to download the registration forms.

March Newsletter

We are so happy to see the arrival of Spring at Alvey Elementary School. This winter was a shock to all of us with the cold temperatures and frequent snow. We are looking forward to warmer and longer days and the smell of Spring in the air. Due to the amount of instructional days missed because of inclement weather, the following changes have been made:
 
-March 31 is no longer a teacher workday. This will be a regular instructional day for the students.
 
-Beginning March 31, our day will be extended by 10 minutes for the remainder of the school year. Afternoon announcements will now begin at 3:05 with dismissal following.
 
-Spring Break has been shortened by one day with Monday, April 21 now being a full day of instruction for all students.
 
-June 17-18 are now full days of school. June 19 will be the last day with an eligible one hour early release, pending no further inclement weather.
 
 
Kiss and Ride Procedure Changes
 
The weather has necessitated a change in our Kiss and Ride procedures. Due to the snow piled on the sidewalks, the students have been required to stay inside and line up in the hallway. We have found this to be a much better practice for Kiss and Ride. By having the students inside, we are better able to monitor behavior, insure safety, and release students in a more efficient manner. This practice will remain in effect for the remainder of the school year.
 
Police Presence at J.W. Alvey
 
Prince William County and State Police officers have been assigned to make regular visits at all Prince William County Schools. After contact has been made with the office staff/administration, the officers walk around the building and on occasion have lunch in our cafeteria.
 
 
SOL Testing
 
We have just completed our first round of SOL testing with our fifth graders in the area of writing. The schedule is being finalized for the Spring SOL’s for grades 3-5. Please look for the schedule to be out on School Fusion by the end of this week. The testing window is from May 19-June 13, with no testing taking place on Friday, May 23. Please keep these dates in mind when planning trips/vacations.

Multicultural Night

Come join us for the Multicultural Dinner Theatre and Student Art Show!
Date and Time: April 29th, 2014; 6:00-8:00 pm (set-up at 5:45 pm)
Location: J.W. Alvey Cafeteria and Gymnasium

We are looking for families to bring traditional foods or beverages, and/or perform acts from their own or others’ cultural backgrounds. Singing, dancing, and playing instruments…it’s all cultural. Come share your heritage through food and performance!
What is culture?
Your culture could be from another country, a region in this country, or just the traditions that your family has. We encourage everyone to share their dishes and special talents!

If you wish to bring a dish or perform an act (about 3 minute song, dance, or other presentation) in the show, please fill out the attached slip (or email henryas@pwcs.edu ), and return it to Ms. Henry as soon as possible.
Please provide your own serving utensils. There will be no reheating facilities; food must come ready to serve. We invite you to stand by your dish and/or provide a display card explaining the cultural heritage of your dish.
A cultural “dinner theatre” is planned for the evening. If you and/or your child(ren) would like to participate, please fill out the attached slip or send an email to Ms. Henry as soon as possible. Spots in the show are limited, and we will take participants on a first come, first serve basis. Ms. Henry will contact you by if you have a spot in the show, as well as further information about your performance.
Even though we hope most people can bring a dish, and that some can perform, we know this is not possible for everyone. You are still invited to come and celebrate with us. Please let Ms. Henry know as soon as possible if you plan to attend this event, and how many in your family will attend.
We will be collecting canned or boxed food items for the Haymarket Food Pantry. Please consider a donation.
