October 2015 Newsletter
Thank you for a fantastic first month of school!  We have enjoyed seeing so many familiar faces back at Alvey, as well as meeting many new students and families.  Our teachers and staff have been working very hard to get the students back into school routines, and have set the tone for another fantastic school year!
Kiss and Ride
Kiss and Ride drop off begins at 8:30 am each morning.  At that time, our staff is outside to monitor students and traffic through the line.  Please do not drop students off prior to 8:30, as there is no adult supervision.
Here are a few reminders to help maintain safety in the Kiss and Ride line:
-Have your students exit your car only on the passenger side.  Some students are getting out on the driver’s side. Occasionally a driver in line will pass a car and this creates a dangerous and unsafe situation.
-Parents must stay in their car when going through the line.  Staff is available to assist your child.  If you need to get out of the car to help your child, please park and walk them to the front of the building.
-Pull up as far as you can in the line.  Staff is directing traffic and will motion for you to pull up so that we can efficiently get cars through the line.  Please do not stop in front of the door if there is space to move forward.
-No left turns out of the Kiss and Ride onto Waverly Farm Dr.
Principal’s Committee
The Alvey Principal’s Committee is comprised of teachers and parents who meet monthly with Ms. Rotruck and Mrs. Macerelli to share their input, advice, and comments about how to continually improve our school.  This is a forum in which suggestions are shared, based on input from community members, which impact instructional programs, the budget, the school environment, and the direction of school initiatives. All meetings are open to any school community member and we welcome your participation.  The Committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm in the school library.  Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 13 at 6:00pm.
Family Life Education Program Notification to Parents
The parent letter/opt-out form is part of the PWCS student “Code of Behavior & Forms.” Objectives by grade level are posted on the Science and Family Life Education Web page at the Family Life Education button). Parents should visit the site and review the objectives for their child’s grade level. Parents may exercise opt-out for any of the FLE sensitive content by returning the opt-out form to the appropriate teacher any time during the school year but preferably within the first two months of school.
Questions about the FLE program or the opt-out procedure may be directed to Kathy Keesee, administrative coordinator, Science and Family Life Education, at 703.791.7848 or
Early Dismissals
If you are going to be picking your child up for an early dismissal, please let the classroom teacher know in advance.  This will allow the teacher to have your child prepared for the early dismissal and will cut down on the amount of wait time for you.
Free and Reduced Meal Applications
Free and Reduced Price Meal Applications were mailed via email or US mail by the School Division to families with children registered in Prince William County Public Schools.  If you did not receive an application, please contact School Food and Nutrition Services at 703-791-7314.  You may also complete the application electronically.  Visit the School Division Web site at to access the electronic application.

September 3, 2015
Dear Parents,
We have had a fantastic first week of school!  It is amazing walking into the classrooms and seeing the students already into a routine.  Please take a moment to read a few important updates and announcements as we move into the second week of school.
New Traffic Routine
Please note the new traffic guideline when exiting the Alvey parking lot. A NO LEFT TURN procedure has been added due to the volume of cars and the inability to keep the traffic flowing on Waverly Farm Drive.  The No Left Turn is in place daily from 8:15am-8:45am and from 3:15pm-3:45pm.  Please adhere to this new procedure.
Advisory Council
J.W. Alvey advisory council is an open committee of parents and staff who meet on a monthly basis to discuss issues specific to our school.  The committee reviews the budget, enrollment, and assessment results to determine next steps in the Strategic Plan.  The meetings begin with an open chair and are open to all parents.  The committee meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 6:00 pm in the library.  Our first meeting is coming up on Tuesday, September 8 at 6:00pm.  Please join us!
PTA Meeting
The PTA is the partnership of teachers and parents working together to create the best learning environment and educational opportunities for J.W. Alvey students. Additionally, we organize events designed to build community and have fun. Membership dues combined with fundraisers enhance our schools technology, fund activities such as assemblies, quality student breakfast, volunteer lunches on field day, cupcakes for the 5th grade celebration, and teacher/staff appreciation week.  We are excited for the many events planned this year and welcome new members to bring their ideas! The first meeting takes place on Tuesday, September 8 at 7:00pm in the library.
Principal Chats
Administration will be available to talk with parents on an informal base each month prior to the monthly Advisory Council/PTA meetings.  The office will be open for from 5-6 pm for you to stop by and share your thoughts and suggestions for our school.   This is in addition to the open chair during our Advisory Council Meetings.  A second opportunity to share your thoughts with administration will be the first Thursday of the month from 7:45am until 8:30am in the office.
Please consider joining the J.W.
