WOW! Ten months have gone by very, very quickly. As we look at the calendar, we find it hard to believe that the end of the school year is only days away! As the year draws to a close, we are so proud of the many accomplishments of our students and staff.  Our students have learned, laughed and made many memories during the past year.  Have a safe and relaxing summer and enjoy every minute with your family.  We look forward to the fall with all the returning families and wish all the families leaving us the best of luck in the future!

Staffing Changes
Please join us in saying goodbye to the staff members that will be leaving us at the end of the school year:  Mrs. Sturdivant, Ms. Asberry, Mrs. Swanigan, and Ms. Peeple, We will miss each one of them dearly and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

Looking towards the 2016-17 school year, we have some exciting changes within our building!  Mrs. Field and Mrs. Overend will be moving to first grade, Mrs. Colvin and Mrs. Eybers will be moving to kindergarten, and Mrs. Snyder will be moving to fifth grade.  We have hired two wonderful new teachers that will be joining us in the fall.  Melissa Mongillo will be joining us from Signal Hill Elementary as our new reading specialist and Susan Hawkins will be joining us from PACE as our new teacher for students with learning disabilities.  We are in the process of hiring two new Special Education teachers that will fill additional vacancies for the 2016-17 school year.

Bell Time Change for 2016-17
Please take note that our bell time is changing for next school year.  School will begin at 8:25am with dismissal being at 3:05pm. More information to follow in the opening of the year letter.

Class Lists
Our hope is to have class lists sent out early in August.  Once we feel that our numbers are accurate and we will not need to add or take away a class, the lists will be finalized and mailed.  The latest date they would be mailed is August 16.

End of Year Medication Pick Up
Please pick up all of your student's unused medication by 3pm the last day of school, June 17. If unused medication is not picked up prior to the last day of the current school year, it will be disposed of by school personnel, per PWCS regulation.
Should you have any questions, please contact our school nurse Mrs. Sprague. Thank you for your cooperation.
Kindergarten and New Student Registration
Kindergarten and new student registration is open all summer, Monday-Friday from 8:30am-2:30pm.  Please encourage your friends and neighbors to register as early in the summer as possible so that we have an accurate number of students for the 2016-17 school year.  Students who will be five years of age or older by September 30 are eligible for enrollment in kindergarten. Registration will take place for those students who reside within Alvey Elementary School boundaries.
Kindly bring the following documents with you:
1. The student’s original birth certificate.
2. Three proofs of residence (one must be a copy of the deed, rental or lease agreement, or a notarized Affidavit of Residency attesting to bona fide residency in Prince William County). Other examples of proofs of residency include utility bills, voter registration, driver’s license, etc.
3. The student’s social security card.
4. A valid immunization record signed by a healthcare professional and a comprehensive physical exam that MUST BE DATED AFTER August 29, 2015. You may bring this information to us any time prior to the start of school.

PTA-
In June, PTA elections will be held for new officers for the 2016-17 school year.  If you are interested in running for a position, please email Mrs. Macerelli at maceral@pwcs.edu by June20.  We will be holding elections and a planning meeting on Tuesday, June 21 at 9:00am in the library to plan the events for the 2016-17 school year.  All parents are welcome to attend and provide feedback on events you would like for next year.

Facebook Summer Project
In an effort to keep the Facebook page running and up to date this summer, we are asking for your help!  We are inviting families to take pictures of their travels over the summer with their student(s) that we can share on the Facebook page.  We did this last summer and had fantastic feedback from families.  Pictures can be sent to Mrs. Macerelli with a quick description and they be placed on the Facebook page so all can see where our Sunrays traveled this summer!  Please send pictures to:  maceral@pwcs.edu  This project will run from June 18-August 19.

Eat Healthy This Summer!
The kids are out of school, the ice cream truck is making its rounds, and it is the season for vacations and barbecues. Healthy eating can be difficult during the summertime. What can you do to boost your nutrition this summer season? Here are some tips:
  • Opt for a whole grain bun with your burger or hot dog, instead of refined white bread.
  • Stock up on vegetables. Wash and cut them and store at eye level in the fridge, so your hungry kids will be more likely to choose them for a snack.
  • Don’t forget your fruits! Berries are in season during the summer months, making them a cost-effective and healthy summer snack.
  • Hydration is always important, but it is especially crucial in the summer heat. Carry a water bottle with you to stay hydrated.
  • Freeze some ripe bananas and blend to make “Nice-cream.” It’s a nutritious, delicious, low fat alternative to traditional ice cream.
  • Eating out on vacation? Choose baked or grilled instead of fried, a vegetable side in lieu of fries, and ask for sauces and dressings on the side. Order water with your meal instead of soda or other sweetened beverages.
Did you know your kids can get a healthy breakfast and lunch at school during the summer months? Free meals will be provided to children up to age 18 who are attending summer school, and to children not attending summer school who live in the surrounding communities. A sample meal would include a sub, baby carrots and broccoli with dip, a fresh nectarine and milk.

Below are school sites and dates for the USDA Summer Food Service Program as of 5/20/16. Come join us for breakfast and lunch! Call 703.791.7314 or visit www.pwcsnutrition.com for the most up to date service times.
