Subject:  Spanish Club and Fun Fair

 
Spanish Club
 
The PTA has launched its first ever after school club, Spanish Club!  Registration is open until this Friday, January 30th 9:00 a.m.  Please visit the PTA website for more information at www.JWAlveyPTA.org.
 
 
Fun Fair
 
It’s time to form a planning committee for Fun Fair! Join us to begin planning our largest annual community event.  We will be meeting immediately after school this Wednesday, January 28th in the library.  If you are interested in chairing this event, please contact Michelle Wolfe at Michelle_Wolfe@msn.com.
 
Help the Homeless
With the Winter temperature dropping Members of our community will be passing out warm clothes and sleeping bags to help the homeless of DC on February 1st.  Brownie Troop 5479 is helping these members collect warm clothing items, sleeping bags, and blankets that you may have to donate. Men's sizes are mostly needed. If you are able to help in any way please bring items in to JW Alvey by January 28th and place in designated box in front office.  For more information, click here.

Additionally, all items in the Alvey Lost and Found will be donated on January 29th.  If your child is missing any clothing items, please check the Alvey Lost and Found in the front hallway prior to January 29th.

January 2015 Newsletter

Happy New Year! May your year be joyful and prosperous as we extend good wishes to our Alvey Families. We are so grateful for your continued support and recognition of the quality instruction and programs provided at Alvey. Your generosity towards our Toys For Tots drive was astounding! We collected 953 toys and were donated a truck from Audio Buys to transport all the toys to the center in Quantico. The children were so proud to donate the toys and really understood the meaning of giving to help others. Best Wishes for a year of good health and happiness for you and yours. Thank you for sending such kindhearted and hardworking children to Alvey Elementary. Happy New Year 2015!

School Security Buzzer System

In December ballots were mailed home giving each family an opportunity to vote "yes" or "no" for a buzzer system at Alvey. The votes have been tallied and the majority of votes were in favor of a buzzer system. The next step in this process is to secure the funds to pay for the system which is an estimated cost of $10,000-$12,000. The Principal’s Committee will begin by looking and applying for grants. Depending on how quickly funds are secured, will depend on the timeline for implementation. Thank you for taking the time to vote so that we could have an accurate assessment from our school community.

Principal’s Committee

The Alvey Principal’s Committee is comprised of teachers and parents who meet monthly with Ms. Rotruck and Mrs. Macerelli to share their input, advice, and comments about how to continually improve our school. This is a forum in which suggestions are shared, based on input from community members, which impact instructional programs, the budget, the school environment, and the direction of school initiatives. All meetings are open to any school community member and we welcome your participation. The meeting for this month will be held on Tuesday, January 13 at 6:00pm in the library. The agenda for this month is: the buzzer system and the parent survey.

Divisionwide Survey

Alvey Elementary is such a great place for our students to learn and grow! Don’t miss the chance to tell PWCS what you think about our school! How do you rate your child’s school and the education programs in our county? All parents or guardians of students enrolled in Prince William County Public Schools will be mailed and emailed a survey in mid-January to measure parent satisfaction and determine how well the School Division is meeting the instructional needs of students. Thank you for taking the time to provide your valuable input!

This page has allowed us to post daily on the learning and great things that are taking place at our school. PTA Happenings

Did you know that for the month of December…

-Your PTA held a successful fundraiser with Square 1 Art that profited $5,800.

-Your PTA held a holiday breakfast catered by IHOP and attended by Elsa, Santa, and the Grinch.

-Your PTA had a vendor fair with 19 vendors at the holiday breakfast.

-Your PTA held a spirit week at Five Below with 10% of all sales coming back to the PTA.

Did you know…

It’s important to show students that adults use reading and writing skills every day. Demonstrate those skills by reading, even if it’s just street signs or directions; write for your children, even if it’s just a note tucked in with lunch. Let them see that schooling goes beyond 8:30am to 3:30pm. When the foundations of reading are in place, everything else falls into place more easily. Read with your child, alongside your child, and even on your own to model the importance of it.

Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser
Dear Parents,
 
Alvey has partnered with the American Heart Association and we would like to teach our students the importance of taking care of their hearts along with helping individuals who are affected by heart disease and stroke. We are asking for your help to spread the word to your family, friends, your co-workers, and place of employment to join Alvey's Team and assist the American Heart Association in making a difference for people who are affected by heart disease (which is our nations #1 killer) and stroke (which is the fourth leading cause of death).
 
We are requesting that ALL donations to the American Heart Association are made ONLINE using Alvey's Heart Team Page. When the link below is displayed on the screen, you will see two options, JOIN TEAM and Donate. Please click JOIN TEAM!!!! This will ensure that I have a record of which students have registered and which ones have earned their 'Thank You' incentives for their efforts. This will also make things easier for Mr. Ferrell and me when it comes time to distribute the incentives.

***When a donation is made by someone in your family, a friend of your family, a co-worker or your place of employment, please make sure the donation is linked to your child’s name so they can receive the incentives that come along with the fundraising event.***
 
Students will participate in our Jump Rope for Heart Event during P.E. class in February to further learn the importance of developing heart-healthy habits and learn your fundraising efforts will help support cardiovascular research and may help save lives across the country.
 
Students will be receiving rubber duck incentives for money raised or donations made to the Alvey Team. To promote our Jump Rope for Heart event, students will be encouraged to wear their lanyards with their ducks attached throughout the school day. Any duck incentive or prize the student shall receive will be given out by the P.E. teachers. A student may receive a maximum of 6 ducks and other prizes depending on the amount of money raised/donated.
